If you've played D&D 3rd Edition, you know almost all of the rules.
The
only real difference is in damage. Basically, "armor class"
measures how
good you are at avoiding being hit, and a damage saving throw measures
how
good you are at soaking up punishment.
When you hit a supervillain, instead of you rolling damage, they make
a
damage saving throw against a difficulty class of 15 + your damage bonus.
SAVE vs. NONLETHAL DAMAGE
Succeed: nothing happens
Fail: HIT - suffer a cumulative -1 penalty on future nonlethal damage
saves, recovered at 1 point/10 rounds
Fail by 5: STUNNED - as above, plus stunned for one round
Fail by 10: KNOCKED OUT - and helpless, future nonlethal damage considered
lethal damage
SAVE vs. LETHAL DAMAGE
Succeed: nothing happens
Fail: WOUNDED - suffer a cumulative -1 penalty to both nonlethal and
lethal damage saves, recovered at 1 point/hour
Fail by 5: STUNNED - as above, plus stunned for one round
Fail by 10: DISABLED - conscious and able to take half action, but anything
strenuous and you start dying
Fail by 15: DYING - and unconscious, must make fortitude save every
hour or
actually die
This works out to combat being one roll for the attacker and one roll
for
the defender, instead of two rolls for the attacker (to hit and damage)
so
it doesn't increase the overall die rolling and should make combat go
as
fast as D&D (unprecedented for superhero games!)
You can pull your punches, determining a maximum damage level ahead
of time.
You also have a certain number of hero points which can be used to re-roll,
improve defense by 5 for a round, decrease nonlethal hits by 5, keep
from
dying when disabled, etc.
